Cartography was of huge importance to military leaders during the Revolution to help prepare for battle and,

in many cases, even decided whether you had the advantage to even engage the enemy in battle.

The Department of the Geographer website provides great insight into what it took to survey, create and authenticate

maps during the Revolutionary War time period while this organization was in existence, 1777-1783.
